Barcelona 2025, Day 2

Started this morning with a fun ride on the metro rather than a hour long hike to get to my big site of the day.

The only location for the day was Sagrada Familia Basilica. This was the final project of Gaudi that he knew would not be completed in his lifetime. To date the project is still ongoing and was begun in 1882 and is expected to be completely finished in 2034 with the main body being finished in 2026. The audioguide that I listened to, spoke of the central tower being completed soon. When I was there, the tower was already up and they were finishing the pinnacle cross. So, things are moving along.

First look coming out of the metro.

Taking the metro was great as it let out right at the basilica!

Timed tickets are required and so is the App for the site. The audioguide was really great and definitely worth listening to. I also highly recommend choosing an early ticket time as there weren’t that many people at the start but it did get progressively busier.

The sun was actually out when I first arrived.

The current entrance facade is the only part that Gaudi saw completed in his lifetime.

The support pillars are meant to represent trees and tree branches.

I got really lucky with some sunlight coming through the windows.

Statue of St. George

The Western exit has much different sculpture style than the Eastern entrance.

There is a museum under the Basilica that gives even greater explanations and detail than the audio guide.

The current model room with 3D printers.

After a busy morning, I hit up a local restaurant for some paella.

I headed back to the hotel to drop some items off and ended up taking an accidental nap. When I got back up, I tried to make my way to another market but wasn’t able to find it. So I went back to the market place I knew about and grabbed some more food from there for dinner.

Hand made potato chips

Fresh tropical juice

Ham and cheese sandwich.

Today was totally worth the flight here! Sagrada is a very unique basilica. My favorite two parts were the fantastic use of light and the change of style as you move from the eastern to the western side. I would say that the Basilica is a must see for anyone traveling to Barcelona.
