England 2025, Day 3

Before I begin today’s journey, a quick video of the upper floor of the cottage I’m staying at.

I forgot to add that yesterday.

Today was a big day! One of the major sights in Cornwall that I have been waiting to see, Saint Michael’s Mount. This was an island abbey, similar to Mont St. Michelle in northern France. Turns out it was similar for two reasons. One is that is also built on an island, although not one as large. Two it was owned by the monks of Mont St. Michelle for three centuries. Despite efforts by the English monks, it never gained as much fame as the abbey in France.

Some time around the 1500’s it was purchased by noble family and has been owned by them ever since. Most of the island was donated to the National Trust but the family still retains some ownership and the two work together to offer it to the public.

You do have to walk a causeway to get out to the Mount.

There is still a small set of homes on the island that house caretakers, shops, museums, and cafes. There used to be more but they were torn down in the Victorian era.

The Giant’s Heart cobblestone.

There is a very interesting path to get to the top.

Not extremely large by any measure.

The library.

I loved the little alcove.

The “great” hall.

Carving all the way around the room. Inspired by the ballad Chevy Chase, not the actor.

A platform space just outside the hall with some excellent views.

View of the closed garden.

And another part of the garden.

The church has been changed so many times they don’t know how much is original anymore.

A scale model of the castle made of used champagne corks. Done by a butler who worked at the castle for 49 years. Guess he had the time.

Some of the other homes and their gardens.

I believe this is Dave, the cat.

My first Cornish Pasty. Very good! Just don’t feed the seagulls.

It was so nice out I was able to eat my lunch at one of their picnic tables. As I ate, I was also able to see that the tide was indeed coming in. I was able to watch the water beginning to lap up and over the causeway.

As I was finished with everything I had wanted to see, I made my way back over to the mainland.

This was just after I walked over.

People just kept going, even as more of the causeway was covered.

The smarter folks.

The last two stubborn folks.

And then it’s an island again.

I did treat myself after watching folks wading in the bay.

Mango, passion fruit sorbet.

My next stop was the electronics store. Why? Because I grabbed the wrong adapter plug to my plug adapter kit so I had no way of recharging my camera batteries or IPad, that’s why. Not my best moment.

My next real location was to the Chysauster Ancient Village. This village dates back to at least before Roman times. It was rediscovered in the late 1800’s and restoration work was done in the 1930’s. You have to use your imagination for what it may have looked like.

The pink/purple stuff is heather.

Inside of one of the homes.

I also made sure to head back early so I could walk around Mousehole while the shops were open.

Dinner tonight was at 2 Fore Street Restaurant. It gets so busy I had to make a reservation and the only time they had was 5PM.

Last night dinner was at the Ship Inn. I’ll try to remember to list the restaurant names going forward.

Grilled Lemon Sole Filets

Hopefully the weather holds tomorrow. I’ve had rain, yes, but a surprising amount of sunshine as well.
