Greece 2025, Day 6

This morning started off with a drive straight up the winding road leading to the monasteries of Meteora. At their peak, there were 24 monasteries. Today, there are only 6 remaining. Most of them require a hike up 142 to over 300 stairs to reach the monastery. We chose one that was open and only had the 142 stairs to climb. The climb was not nearly as bad as we thought it might be and was definitely worth the climb.

Monastery of Varlaam.

The building on the left as a winch that they use to bring supplies up to the monastery.

The room housing the winch and the platform on rails that slides under the supplies to bring them in.

Other nearby monasteries.

One of the shooting locations for the James Bond movie “For Your Eyes Only”.
One of the walkways leading to a monastery.

This monastery has a bridge you can walk across but was not open today.
We did find some very hungry furry friends.
They all seemed to be the same age, most likely the same litter.

We spent the whole morning either at the monastery or driving to different viewpoints to see all of the monasteries we could view. It is possible to see all six monasteries in one day but I don’t recommend it as you wouldn’t be able to spend enough time at each one.

As a note, they are all still functioning monasteries.

A bit before noon we began to make our way to our next stop. We did hit up lunch along the way.

Another salad.

Another stuffed beef patty. Sue me, they’re good!

Our end destination to day was Delphi. Some 3-4 hours away we had another long drive together there. We managed to arrive with some daylight left and wandered around the town before dinner. The town is mostly gift shops but it has some great views!

This is why people buy the Smart cars.

View down the street from my hotel room balcony.

Dinner was very good but we were still a bit full from lunch.

Slow cooked goat with local greens. I did not care for the greens but it was worth a try.

Crushed pea croquette.

Meatballs.

Green salad with oranges.

Tomorrow our weather luck runs out as we are expecting rain and a high of 50 degrees. Should be fun!
