Greece 2025, Day 5

A very short post today as we spent almost all day traveling from Rethymno, Crete to Kalabaka on mainland Greece.

The morning started with a great deal of haze that never went away. Sand and hot wind from the Sahara have blown north, as far as Switzerland. This has caused a yellow/orange haze to hang in the air all through Greece.

We were sad to leave Rethymno. It’s has a fantastic old town and is eminently walkable with a great variety of restaurants, bars and shops. That being said, I would not want to be there in peak season as we were told that the streets get packed with people, like sardines.

Our travels today took us to Meteora where, tomorrow, we will try to explore at least one of the monasteries.

Tonight we had dinner a short distance away from our hotel. No place special and dinner was relatively simple but decent. We’ve been a bit spoiled by Mina’s in Crete.

Beef patty stuffed with tomatoes and peppers.

Moosaka, a lasagna like dish with meat and layers of vegetables instead of pasta.
Complimentary dessert. Cornbread like cake with vanilla ice cream.

My newest friend from the shop across the street.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be a bit more interesting!
