Greece 2025, Day 3

A couple of things I missed from yesterday. Crete has 50 olive trees for every person living here. Each person uses 25-30 liters of olive oil per year. Most families own and harvest their own olive trees to provide them with olive oil for the whole year.

Today, we started off the day with a visit to the Ancient Greek city of Aptera. This city began as far back as 1400 B.C. It continued to be a prominent city even unto Roman times. My favorite part was the Greek/Roman theater. If you stand in the right location you can whisper on the ground and be heard in the upper seating.

Yes, those are snow capped mountains in the background.

Old monastery on the sight.

Roman bath.

Greek bath.

Roman cistern

Nearby Turkish fort.

For the afternoon we headed to the city of Chania. This town is renowned for its old town and narrow streets. The part that people don’t tell you is that you have to slog through the extensive modern city first. While we did enjoy a relaxing lunch and some light shopping, we prefer the smaller town of Rethimno.

Candy shop entrance.

Another friendly local.

The busy season is still a little ways away.

Fried cheese but I forget the type.

Just caught sardines at the beginning of lunch.

They’re looking at me…

Sardines at the end of lunch.

Our dining friend.

The only downside to today was that the wind of yesterday had blown out and the air was rather still when not by the water. Even in March, we’re experiencing 80 degree weather at times.

Tomorrow is our wander day, we have some sites chosen but they are not places we feel we have to see. With our luck they will be the best places we go to in Crete!
