Poland 2024 Day 10

Sadly, today I left Zakopane to begin making my way to Krakow. I had one stop over before I get there and that was to the city of Gorlice. Don’t bother looking it up in tour books, it’s not going to be in any of them. The whole reason I went is because we believe that is where my great grandfather was from. Unfortunately, we have completely lost touch with any family left in Poland and my great grandfather last went in 1967.

Aside from visiting part of my family’s ancestral home, I also went to see the ethnographic outdoor museum they had in or near the town. I’m a little fuzzy on where the town border is. They have a small but nice collection of buildings from the surrounding areas showing homes and barns that locals would have used and lived in.

It was a little wet this day.

That is rope being used to fill in the gaps between the logs.

I have never seen a hand millstone with a set up like this. It’s always been a simple handle instead of the long pole.

Inside of a building from the 1920’s.

They had a nice exhibit on the traditional clothing worn by the different ethnic groups from the area. Poland is very far from a homogenous group of people.

Never seen this small of a windmill either.

Pottery kiln.

Lunch was at a famous local restaurant today.

Today was my last full day of having a car. Tomorrow I drop it off after hitting up a very large salt mine and then off to Krakow for the remainder of my trip.

For most of my lodging there hasn’t been much to show but I will finish with some pictures of the chalet I stayed at in Zakopane. My favorite lodging in Poland to date!

All of the chalets are built in the distinctive Zakopane style.

Fantastic lodging and only a 15 minute walk into town for dinner! Wish I could take it with me.
