Woke up to some actual sunshine today. Don’t worry it didn’t last. Breakfast was barely passable but I dot blame the hotel too much as there was almost no one at the hotel so no real reason to put out too many items that they would just have to throw out. Stepping out and looking at the mountains first thing was pretty great though.
Had a lovely two hour drive through the mountains to get to Spoleto. This hilltop town is the first on my list for the region of Umbria. I’ve never been to this region before so everything I see will be new!
Spoleto was a bit on the cool side as the wind had nothing to stop on top of the hill. Getting to the top was much, much easier than I thought it was going to be. A short walk and, bless their souls, the town had put a series of escalators almost all the way to the top! Sitting on the top of the hill is Rocca Albornozlana.
The Rocca held a collection of local religious items and old frescos. Each room also had an explanation of its previous use when it was an active fort.

After touring the fort I started down to the rest of the town. Got stopped a bit by a road race the town was holding for the kids of the town.

Lunch was a simple affair, just chicken with porcini mushrooms.

The rest of the images will give you a sense of what the town is like.

These last few photos are of my lodging for the next few nights. It is up in the middle of nowhere but who wouldn’t want to stay in a castle for a few nights.

Not only is this one of my most interesting stays on a trip it is also one of the least expensive! I’ll have more images later in the week of the castle. There is a tower here that we can go up anything day or night.
