Norway 2022 Day 7

Started my slow loop back to Oslo by leaving Bergen and heading north. The first stop of today was Tvindefossen, an easy to get to waterfall. Located at a camp site, yes you can camp at this waterfall, Tvindefossen was a bit low on flow and I suspect is more impressive in the spring. Still, really interesting for the stepped rock face making up the base of the falls.

My next stop of the day has been a subject of anticipation for me ever since I heard about it. Today, I went to a Viking village in Gudvangen! Although not very large there are guided tours on the hour to explain several facets of Viking life. There were several school groups visiting the sight where it seems they do programs to educate children on their heritage. They also get to throw axes at a target, I missed out as a child.

After 11km through tunnels, I next emerged at the town of Flam. A popular tourist trap that is a stop on multiple itineraries through the area. Two cruise ships were at the town so the town was busier than some of the other sites I have been to recently. Aside from shopping, drinking and eating there wasn’t much to do in the town. It seems more a springboard for other area activities.

My final stop for the day was my splurge lodging for the trip, Vangsgaarden Gjestgiveri. I chose this place because the room I booked came with a porch that hangs out over the water giving an unimpeded view of the fjord! The lodging also boasts a gastro pub for dinner, which was both convenient and excellent. This is definitely the best place I have stayed so far!
