My first nights’s lodging had a pretty simple breakfast where I got to try the brown cheese that the Norwegians seem very enthusiastic about. Good stuff and I will definitely have it again! Thankfully breakfast was all you can eat because that was all I got to eat until dinner, more on that later.

My first stop was the Hallingdal Museum just a bit south of my lodging. Loosely similar to Old Sturbridge Village in that a number of old home from the region were moved to the same grounds to preserve them. Interesting place and I was the only visitor there, probably for the whole day. It is definitely the off season at this point.

After the museum I continued on Route 7 towards my final destination for the day, Eidfjord. I tried to see three stave churches along the way but only managed to find two of them. There have not been a lot of signs for the churches so far.

After my hunt for the churches I headed further west up to a long plateau covered with glacial rocks and a lot of pools and lakes. The area was extremely open and several sections were covered with, what I believe are, summer cabins. I can’t imagine driving up there in the winter. That being said the road does have very tall sticks in the ground on either side so the snow plows know where the road is. Not a good sign.
What was good was the weird little tourist stand that I found where the buildings were small, kiln like, domes made of wood and sod. They had racks outside with reindeer and sheep skins for sale. If you are vegan you may wish to avoid this place.

My last tourist sight was Voringfossen, a waterfall leading to a very large gorge. My fear of heights not withstanding, it was an impressive view from the top and a painful walk back up from the viewing bridge.

I ended my drive in the town of Eidfjord. I had been pretty concerned with time throughout the day because I only had an hour window in which to check-in. Due to this time pressure I had not stopped for lunch and intended to get a good dinner at near my lodging. Little did I know that almost all of the restaurants in town are currently closed until Fridays, thank you off season, and the one restaurant that appeared open closed up just as I was walking towards it. Thankfully I had bought an emergency breakfast which then became emergency lunch.
While the dining was not great today, the views were stunning. I wish I had been able to spend more time enjoying the drive and I hope tomorrow present me with some better dining options!
