Ireland 2021 Day 10

From the start I had sun today! My first day in County Mayo took me to Achill Island a bit west of Newport. From what i can tell, the island produces two thing; sheep and peat. It seemed like every open space was either sheep pasture or peat harvesting fields. Many of the peat fields had filled white bags which I assumed were for the commercial sale of the peat.

Everywhere else had sheep poop. It was unavoidable. Throughout the entire day I could see sheep wandering in every space that there might be grass or on the way to grass.

I spent the first part of the day at an abandoned village. It didn’t take long but the village had some great panoramic views.

I took the drive along the southern coast following the very short stop at the village. Aside for some great views and even more sheep there is NOTHING out there. If you ever take the drive make sure to pack a lunch or bring some snacks.

My final stop in the afternoon was a tower house. The best part was that the tower house was owned by Grace O’Malley the Pirate Queen of Ireland! I mean, how could you not want to see that?
