Scotland 2019, Day 2

The expected rain came today but thankfully only during the early part of my drive. By the time I reached my first stop of the day the rain had passed me by.

Kilchurn Castle is one of the many picturesque ruins in Scotland. Actually, I think the ruins are a bit more interesting. You get to use your imagination a bit more and that’s almost always better than the reality.

I did not tour the castle because, in all honesty, I really just wanted the one shot. You don’t have to go through all of the castles for the experience you want. It was also a very wet walk to get to the castle and I was more interested in walking around my next stop.

Saint Conan’s Church is just a short drive away and one of the more modern locations I’m planning on going to. The church was built in the 1920’s by a local so that his mother would not have to go as far for church. It became a lifetime project for both him and his sister. There is no one style to it. Instead it pulls from a large variety of styles that create a unique look to the church. If you have been to a wide variety of European churches the structure can feel just a bit off as design choices you are expecting just aren’t there. It was definitely worth going to! Make sure to make a donation though, there are already a lot of repairs that need to be made.

For a lunch break I headed to the town of Inveraray. I did not hit up the castle there as I had been before but I did finally get to walk through the down town.

Afterward I went to a historic township that demonstrates formerly typical tenant farming. After walking through the buildings and grounds I am really glad I was not a farmer in Scotland during tenant farming. I’m pretty happy not being a farmer right now! Way too much work.

My last hike for the day was up to Dunadd Fort. This fort was the home of the first Scotti kings in Scotland, the people who eventually gave their name to the country.

The hike up was not that bad and I can only imagine attacking the fort would not have been a fun prospect. The view from the top is pretty impressive!

For dinner I wanted to go some place that I had looked at for previous trips but not been able to fit in. The Drover’s Inn is over 300 years old, has pretty good food and had live music when I was there! Great end to the day.
