I’m afraid I’m going to combine my last days in Ireland together.
Saturday was the last day of any significance on this trip. I was not feeling great in the morning after a rough night but there was a fair amount I wished to see so I headed off anyways.
My first stop, for my day in Waterford, was call Reginald’s Tower, after the Viking founder of the city. A tower has stood on the current spot for around a thousand years and the current one is around 900 years old, depending on the section of the tower. The tower has a well put together history of the town along with a small but impressive collection of local artifacts. I also had the luck that the tower was free that day, no idea why.

Next on my visit was the Viking Virtual Tour. Set in a semi-recreation of a Viking house, which itself is set in the ruins religious site. The tour has you done VR sets and take a tour through the Viking history of the town and surrounding area. I won’t say that they had the most state of the art computer models but the tour was really fun and everyone I saw walked out with smiles on their faces.

Next on my list was the Medieval Museum. The Museum was designed and built to protect the lower level of another religious site. In the floor of the site were hidden vestments from the medieval church that were hidden to prevent their loss when the church was sacked. The museum itself houses the vestments on display as well as other documents and artifacts important to the town. It has an even more extensive history of the town than the tower.
The next stop was the Bishop’s Palace, part of a combo ticket. It seemed more of a large house than a palace to me but I didn’t really care by that point. Throughout the morning I had not felt great and this grew worse as the day had worn on. By the time I got part way through the palace I definitely felt the need to head back to my hotel.
Now for why there have been no posts since Friday. Apparently, I managed to get food poisoning on Friday evening. I thought it was over by Saturday so I went on with my day, there was a lot I wanted to do. I was emphatically wrong! I ended up laid out at my hotel for the rest of the day and evening, getting very little rest. By morning I did not know when I would get better so I rearranged my travel plans. Since I had to drive to Dublin Airport to drop off my rental I decided it was probably best to be sick at home than sick in a foreign country. I managed to change my flight to that afternoon and get back home late Sunday evening.
I can’t say that I liked skipping Dublin but traveling solo it is hard to take care of yourself when you are ill. So, I do think heading back early was the right idea just not one I was happy with. I definitely feel a lot better by this point and I’m not sure that I would have got the rest I needed walking the streets of Dublin. It just means I’ll have to go back for another trip!
