Ireland, Day 3

Not quite the day I had hoped for today. I was trying the peninsula south of Killarney and its Ring of Beara but I didn’t get too far along. Unfortunately, unlike its better known cousins to the north the Ring of Beara seems to suffer from a lack of views for a good portion of its start.

I did try to see a stone ring that was down the smallest road in Ireland that I have yet to drive on. At the end I found a locked gate and no sign of the stone ring.

I did get back on the main road and gave myself until a bit before noon to turn back if I had not found anything of interest. After nearly running out of fuel I decided my afternoon would be better spent further north. I didn’t consider the morning a complete waste. Sometimes trying new areas doesn’t pan out but it’s still fun! I did take the costal road that I had skipped on the way out and did find some better views but the road was narrow with only a few places to stop along the way.

So, after a relaxing lunch in Kenmare I headed back over the mountains through Moll’s Gap to check out some of the sites closer to Killarney. I did manage to stop a few times along the way and even met some deer friends again (yes, I said it).

I stopped to see three sites before the sun set for the day; Muckross House, Muckross Abbey, and Ross Castle. I don’t really care for guided tours all that much so I did not go through the House or the Castle, the Abbey is a ruin and open for walking.

The area around the Castle was just a little wet. Recent heavy rains have flooded some of the walkways, and other things, to the point that ducks were swimming across the foot path.

Tomorrow I head of to Waterford and its Christmas festival!
