Croatia/Italy Day 5

Today was a better day!

My journey this morning was to the National Park of Krka. Krka was established as a national park in 1985 due to its spectacular waterfalls. The process that makes the falls, and they are ‘living’ falls, also creates the blue tint to the waters.

I went to the section called Skradinski buk, pretty much the only area currently open, as it is the most visited and has the most waterfalls in a small area. There are a number of walking trails to take; however, most people opt to stay on the shorter trails around the falls. It was very inexpensive to get into the park, partly because the other areas aren’t open yet, and totally worth the small fee.

You can start your trip at the top of the canyon and walk down, but since that also means walking back up at some point I opted to drive down to a small parking area. I don’t think you can do this in tourist season as parking is very limited. From the drive down you get a preview of what is to come with views of some of the lakes. The coloring is very similar to the mountain lakes in Switzerland except these are surrounded by lush vegetation. From the car park it’s just a short walk to the start of the trail.

Once I started walking from m car I could already tell that some of the area was flooded; I am assuming due to spring melt. The trail starts off, and is mostly made up of, railingless raised wooden walkways. These take a bit to get used to and I would not want to walk on them during busy season. Pretty much from the get go two things impressed me; first, the overwhelming sound of all that water and second, the jaw dropping sight of all of that azure blue water!

There were some signs of the flooding as well as the work they are doing to repair it.

I spent all morning and into the early afternoon at the park. Pictures really don’t do it justice and I wish I could be here a bit later in the season when the boats and northern areas are open. I highly recommend a full day if you are here in season to take full advantage of all Krka has to offer!

After Krka anything else was going to pale in comparison but I was also really hungry by this point so I headed to another medieval town center called Sibenik. Similar to Split in that many of the older buildings remain, if built along a hill side. There is not much to do but wander the streets and take in the sights. After enjoying a very leisurely lunch first.

The last image is an unusual sight, a 24 hour clock. I have not seen many of these and I don’t recall if I’ve seen one on a church wall before.

Tomorrow will be my last full day in Croatia. Part of the following day will be spent in Split and part getting ready to board the ferry for Ancona, Italy.
